Rocky View County's Land Use Bylaw sorts acreages into districts, and each district sets the largest accessory building you can put up with a building permit alone. On Residential, Country Residential (R-CRD) land the permitted size is 90 m², about 969 sq ft, so a 30x40 shop at 1,200 sq ft already needs a development permit. R-CRD also caps the total footprint of all accessory buildings at 120 m², about 1,292 sq ft, so a 40x60 there means asking for a variance. On Residential, Rural (R-RUR) parcels the permitted size is 190 m², about 2,045 sq ft: a 30x40 fits, a 40x60 at 2,400 sq ft does not, and total accessory coverage is capped at 380 m² on parcels over 4.0 hectares and 285 m² below that. Both residential districts limit accessory buildings to 7.0 metres high, and the bylaw measures height as the average of all elevations, not the peak. If your acreage is in an Agricultural district (A-GEN or A-SML) the permitted size rises to 930 m² with no height cap. One rule catches steel buildings in particular: in any Residential district an accessory building must be similar to, and complement, the house in exterior material, colour and appearance.
